First Lady Michelle Obama broke ground on a new White House vegetable garden on Friday, digging a plot on the mansion's south lawn to help provide her children and visitors with fresh, healthy food. Obama, who has made a point of reaching out to the local Washington community since her husband's inauguration, gathered a group of school children to dig up the patch, which will be the first vegetable garden at the White House since Eleanor Roosevelt planted a "Victory Garden" during World War Two.

"I want to make sure that our family, as well as the White House staff and all the people who come to the White House and eat our food, get access to really fresh vegetables and fruits," Obama said. "What I found with my girls, who are 10 and seven, is that they like vegetables more if they taste good." Planted as many Americans grappled with obesity and diabetes, the White House Vegetable Garden will be planted later in the spring and will include berries and mint in addition to spinach, peas, fennel and squash. More and other varieties of vegetables will be featured in the new vegetable garden.

A brief history lesson about the famous Victory Gardens: Any war, including WWII, profoundly changed the ways of the United States and influenced almost every aspect of American life. For those who remained on the home front, food rationing and shortages of all types of food products, became a grim reality of every day life. As part of the war effort, the U.S. government rationed foods like sugar, butter, milk, cheese, eggs, coffee, meat and canned goods. Labor and transportation shortages made it hard to harvest and move fruits and vegetables to market. To meet the growing demand of feeding our fighting soldiers and much of the world then too, the American farmers were thrust into a different type of combat. So, the government turned to its citizens and encouraged them to plant "Victory Gardens." They wanted individuals to provide their own fruits and vegetables.

In 1941 the Agricultural Department in Washington, D.C., startled most Americans by coming out and suggesting to everyone, that if they wanted fresh vegetables on their dinner tables, they should plant a Victory Garden to help themselves, neighbors, and the country during the war crisis. Neighbors pooled their resources, planted different kinds of foods, and formed cooperatives. All in the name of patriotism.

Many Americans, who didn't know a garden hoe from a rake, began planting a Victory Garden. Armed with shovels and packets of vegetable seeds, in millions of small town America backyards, empty lots and on city rooftops, vegetable gardens, know as Victory Gardens, suddenly sprouted up across this great country of ours. Now the astounding results from everyone who rolled up their sleeves and pitched into the great cause...!

By 1943, Americans answered the call and had planted over 20 million victory gardens, producing a estimated to be 9-10 million tons, of fresh, home grown food. This accounted for over 50% of all the fresh vegetables consumed in the U.S. at that time, an amount equal to all commercial production of fresh vegetables. So, the Victory Garden program made a huge difference. These wonderful and extraordinary gardening efforts made all Americans feel like they helped in the war struggle and were a part of the war effort, and in actuality, they played a major role in winning the war and writing the peace we still enjoy today...!

Victory Gardens Update: Americans, well into the late 1950s, planted backyard gardens for every day fresh produce. The Victory Gardens planted during World War II helped many Americans be more self-sufficient. Today, right now... you can grow lots of vegetables on a very small piece of ground, or even start with an empty coffee can, a few seeds and a bit of soil, on the porch or patio. A raised garden bed and several farming techniques can yield even more daily produce for your kitchen table.
